White Fillings

White fillings, or composite fillings, are matched to the color of your teeth. They're useful for restoring a decayed tooth or repairing a defect. Although most often used on the front teeth where a natural appearance is important, they are sometimes also used on a back tooth if they're small or may be visible.

How are white fillings done?
Composites, like silver fillings, can be prepared and placed in one visit. First, your cosmetic dentist removes the decayed portion of the tooth, and then "etches" its surface with a very mild acid solution. On this prepared surface, he then brushes a bonding agent, followed by several thin layers of the tooth-colored composite. Lastly he'll chemically harden, or cure, the composite with a special light, and then polish it.

Because these fillings are hardened by the light, you can eat immediately. Within the next couple of weeks you may feel some temperature sensitivity, but if it continues longer than that, do contact us.

These composite fillings are very popular, and for several reasons. First, the mercury in the older amalgam fillings is thought to be potentially toxic; secondly, many consider white composite fillings to be a more up-to-date technology; and thirdly, composite fillings are more aesthetically pleasing and more resistant to fracture.
